Double Chin Treatment

A non-surgical minimally invasive treatment for the permanent elimination of
the double chin.

It is NOT for the treatment of lax or saggy skin in the neck giving the
appearance of a “turkey neck”.

It involves the injection (multiple injections) of a non-human, non-animal
chemical into the fat pad below the chin.

The chemical is deoxycholic acid, a component of bile acids. Bile acids role in
our body is to digest fats ingested in our diet.

When deoxycholic acid is injected into the chin fat pad, it causes the fat cells
to breakdown. This sets up an intense inflammatory reaction which then
activates the scavenger mechanism in our skin to mop up the debris.

How many treatments do I need?

2 treatments at 6 to 8 week intervals are required to achieve the loss of
double chin. Visible change is usually not appreciated after 1 treatment.

How many injections will I have?

At the first treatment, between 20 and 30 injections, depending on the size of
the fat pad.

Is it painful?

The perception of pain, its intensity etc, is an individual phenomenon. The
treatment is done using ice compression and most patients tolerate this well.
Topical anaesthetic cream may also be used.

Immediately after the injection, patients feel a burning sensation, like a bad
sunburn at the injection site. Ice compressors help to calm this down. The
burning sensation lasts about 20 mins and slowly settles. Analgesics may be
used if required.

Is there any downtime?

Yes, you may require 1 to 2 days off work due to the swelling. The
inflammatory reaction causes swelling. Swelling is a positive sign – if there is
no swelling it may be a sign that the treatment is not working.

Are there any side effects?

  • Swelling (as mentioned above)
  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Itching
  • Numbness
  • Induration or leatheryness of the skin
  • Nodules
  • Nerve damage

This treatment is indicated for people who have a desire to eliminate their
double chin – best results seen in those with moderate to severe chin fat pad.
